WHAT’S IN A REPUTATION? LOTS!

Which are India’s most ‘reputable’ companies? Forbes magazine has brought out its Top Ten list of India’s best-perceived companies, based on a survey carried out by Reputation Institute (which recently ranked the reputations of 600 global biggies). But first, what does it take to earn your customers’ trust? Forbes says that “Good products are an important start, of course. But customers judge companies based on a range of factors: How they treat their employees, how they treat the environment and how much they contribute to the society.” So here’s what Indians feel about their best mettle in India Inc.

ALL SET TO SQUASH THE REST…!

The Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has been caught joking that Nicol David is 'now more famous than me' and well the world’s no. 1 women squash player sure is a superstar in her home country. Nicol’s the only female squash player to have won the World Junior title twice, the first Asian to win the British Open in 2005 and is the current champion of the British Open and World Open. This pretty petite squash princess is bound to hog the limelight for more reasons than just being the flag bearer at the closing ceremony.

Lame Duck

What’s amazing is the extent to which insiders still cringe before a lame duck with a 60% disapproval rating. Look at what seems to have happened to the Iraq Study Group, whose mission statement says that it would provide an “independent assessment.” If press reports are correct, the group did nothing of the sort. Instead, it watered down its conclusions and recommendations, trying to come up with something Bush wouldn’t reject out of hand. In particular, says Newsweek, the report “will set no timetables or call for any troop reductions.” All it will do is “suggest that the president could, not should, begin to withdraw forces in the vaguely defined future.”

Expansion Time

It’s expansion time at Marico! After SEBI recently gave a green signal to the Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) route of raising funds, the FMCG major has quickly hopped on to this route to finance its latest acquisition plans. Marico, has raised Rs.1.5 billion through the issue of 2.9million fresh equity share on private placement. Pricing its offering at Rs.522 per share, the company is the first to raise equity through the QIP route. The issue, which opened on November 30, was over subscribed3.4 times. Kotak Investment Banking and Citigroup Global Markets were the joint global coordinators and joint book runners.

THE SPY WHO LOVED ME(N)?
