Like the Colorado River in the United States that suffers an absolute change in its flow patte
rn, thanks to the many dams constructed on it affecting local temperatures and endangering many fish varieties that had evolved in the swift -flowing, silt-laden water. The Ganga, considered the holiest by Indians, a river on whose loamy banks lives one in every twelve of the human species, figures amongst the top ten dying rivers due to mindless water extraction and pollution. However it is China’s Yangtze River and its tributaries that face a major threat with over 600 kilometres of the river in critical conditions. “The river's annual harvest of aquatic products dropped from 427,000 tonnes in 1950s to about 100,000 tonnes in 1990s,” reports China Daily, China’s leading English newspaper.

the city of New Orleans ‘shaken and stirred’, in what has been described as one of the most destructive forces to have ever hit the United States. With every flood prevention and safety system failing in Katrina’s path, the city of New Orleans nearly perished. The increase in intensity of hurricanes is being linked to global warming. Consistently rising sea temperatures coupled with cool and moist climate and mild winds are all the ingredients to stir up, well, more than just a storm. Researchers have found a surge in sea surface temperatures in recent years and gather that the frequency of formation of hurricanes and their intensity is on the rise due to this change. Plans for monitoring the behaviour of hurricanes and sea temperatures have already been put into action in an effort to conjure-up any possible remedy to prevent or at least be prepared for future occurrences.
or the third? Obviously, millions of Indian farmers do. As weather conditions become more unpredictable, the chances of not repaying the loan by a farmer are also becoming more evident. And now, most disappointing statistics from the government reveal that while 65% of Indian agriculture is dependent on natural factors, particularly rainfall, any discrepancy in rainfall accounts for over 50% of variability in crop yields. Then there are the most inane insurance schemes set up under the aegis of National Agricultural Insurance Schemes for farmers’ future. The present schemes illogically settle claims based on actual area yield. Worse, the settlement process is generally delayed, in some cases up to 6-12 months from the occurrence of the event, till which time the farmer is bankrupt many times over. Besides, only notified crops, not all, are eligible for the above crop insurance schemes. Wonder why it’s no wonder that the number of farmer suicides is increasing!
