Mother Nature seems to have sprung a surprise by advancing the onset of the Spring season, even before the scheduled finale of the cold weather. Netherlands, for instance, after a warmed up autumn witnessed the arrival of swallows and Red Admiral Butterflies, a signal that Summer had set in. Bulgaria too faces a situation where its bear populace is displaying its incapability to hibernate, clearly an indication of the biological clock going for a toss. Again, right from the olives to the orange trees, the bloom began in Mediterranean Greece well before the scheduled start. Scientists have gone on record to project the year 2007 as the warmest year of our planet (vapourising the record set in 1998!), predicting a 0.54 degree rise in global temperature. Recent reports from the United Nations have hinted at the possibility of floods, famines and heat waves gaining frequency in the coming years.

"Price"

But consider the following. The news is always favorable near market tops or when a sector is about to peak out. Most analysts will also be most bullish about the prospect of a sector right at the very top of the market – remember high tech stocks in 2000? Also, near stock market tops the price-to-earnings ratio is frequently low because the problem lies less with the “price” than with the “earnings”. In 1929, the US stock market sold for less than 14-times earnings. But then earnings collapsed and stocks plunged by 90%. Finally, the last people I would listen to for advice are government officials and especially central bankers. In fact, to listen to central bankers is about as stupid as for a women to ask her husband who just spent two weeks in Thailand or in Brazil if he had been faithful….. So, how should an investor navigate in these difficult times? In the future, avoiding losses will be more important than making huge gains.

America loses face trying to blame Cuba’s human rights record

The specific complaint against Cuba to the UN Human Rights Council relates to Cuban legislation, arbitrary detentions, torture and unfair summary proceeding against civil rights activists and journalists. But quite pugnaciously, these criticisms against the regime seem more of a conjurer’s delight than having any relevance; especially after analysing the UNDP ranks and Cuba’s initiative towards better living.

Beware the travails of your trigger-happy Prez!

Time for serious introspection by Americans – are we moving the right way in Iraq?
In the West, some of the most important information about Iraq remains either ignored or unspoken. For example, one of the least noticed recent news stories from the tortured land of Iraq was among the most illuminating: A poll in Baghdad, Anbar and Najaf on the invasion and its consequences. “About 90% of Iraqis feel the situation in the country was better before the US-led invasion than it is today,” United Press International reported on survey, which was conducted in November 2006 by the Baghdad-based Iraq Center for Research and Strategic Studies.
