India hasn’t really arrived as an automotive hub

India hasn’t really arrived as an automotive hub as recent data seems to suggest; but it cannot be denied that the country is staring at quite a few phenomenal opportunities, analyses virat bahri of B&E

If you see actual export figures of different players, it’s evident how the rest have hardly managed to even start leveraging India’s so-called prowess as a manufacturing base. And a lot has got to do with the cash for clunkers programme in Europe. Governments in Europe began to offer significant scrappage incentives to car buyers interested in exchanging their old cars for new ones. Small car makers have particularly benefited. In an exclusive to B&E, H. S. Lheem, MD, Hyundai India admitted, “Scrappage program announced by the Governments of various countries like Germany & Japan helped a lot and I believe that this year, we will export over 2.7 lakh vehicles.”

Ashvin feels that “perception is more to do with the brand than country of production.” So true carriers of the ‘made in India’ brand are companies like Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra; and they still fare quite badly on the export front. The reasons are not hard to realise. No true blue ‘made in India’ car has ever generated as much hype as the Nano. When the car was launched, many global analysts admitted that Nano is an excellent innovation… but largely for the third world; and that reflects the perception a ‘made in India’ brand still carries there.

But a world struck by recession and exorbitant fuel prices is indeed seeking frugal solutions; and therefore, this perception can work to India’s advantage. Auto expert Tutu Dhawan comments, “The number of i10s and Suzuki cars that you see today on European roads is amazing. Worldwide, people (now) realise that you need small, more fuel efficient cars.” And that’s India’s strength; a fact that’s not entirely lost on automotive manufacturers. That is precisely why GM, Toyota, Ford, Nissan et al are all ramping up their small car initiatives in the country; as the success of such efforts will open more vistas for them.

It doesn’t make much sense to be China-focussed; Chinese car makers are too focussed on their domestic market (and on other emerging markets), which is at least five times the size of India’s.

Kemah Tinggi Hotel

‘Welcome to paradise’ is what this luxury villa subtly whispers in your ears the moment you step in…! Defining luxury in a whole new way is what Kemah Tinggi is all about. Unmatched hospitality and exquisite comfort cushions you from the hectic city life. Kemah Tinggi (high pavilion) derived its name from the dramatically tall and open-sided structure in the centre of this luxury villa. Regular life needs to take a breather and this is the place to unwind. With exquisite calmness that one is greeted with, and immaculate service, one feels as if relaxing at the Creator’s Spa. Curl up with a book in your hand on a comfortable hammock while watching the palms sway to the beats of your favourite music and enjoy the waves crashing near you. It’s time for you to welcome this paradise of a moment into your life!

The view: One could watch the sunset in the evenings across the rice paddies and the frangipani trees offering shade to the lush lawns. The luxury villa has been tactfully designed in a fashion that it gives one the most spectacularly scenic view of the Indian ocean.

Archi type: Specially designed with its soaring columns and dramatic roof, guests could frame the views across the sparkling pool and lawns towards the green rice fields and crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. The interiors are understated with Balinese accents and are tastefully decorated with rich and neutral tones. The contemporary aesthetics at once seem sophisticated and simple and at the same instance they are intimate and casual.

Bon appétit: Contemporary specialities, along with Asian and Indonesian dishes, are bound to trigger your taste buds. A highlight is the special children’s menu that is ready to pamper your little ones. Balinese cuisine suggests a few exotic specialties such as Lawar, Bebek Betutu and Babi Guling which are a must try.

Around the corner: Bali is such a small island that everything is... well, just around the corner. It’s best to set camp at a luxury villa like Kemah Tinggi which is in the suburbs and offers tranquillity. At the same time, it is close to all sites worth a visit such as the Seminyak, Kuta Beach, Ulu Wato (cliff top temple).

Nuclear attacks that almost wiped

Millions of civilians were the hapless victims of the nuclear attacks that almost wiped two cities off the map… Today, most Americans believe that Uncle Sam did right in bombing Japan!

Major General (Retd.) Rajbir Gill feels, “It’s a never-ending debate and it can be argued endlessly whether it was the right decision or not. The war was on for close to three years and in order to avoid further misery, the US bombarded Japan. In order to be sure of their weapon and the reaction of Japan, the US overdid the damage, and could have refrained from bombing Nagasaki.” Since then it has been a standard belief that whatever was done, was done for the better. And it holds true to the famous saying by Dr. Joseph Goebbels, propaganda minister of the Third Reich, “Repeat a lie a thousand times and it becomes the truth.” In the present peace loving times, where all nat

ions preach humanity and love, a feeling of grief and guilt should fill the hearts of one and all. Technical advancement with respect to nuclear energy was not aimed to equip nations with mass destructive bombs such as Fat Man and Little Boy. Little did they know then that the side effects of these radiations would damage the victims’ gene-pool, and that their impact would be felt for generations to come. These attacks triggered the race amongst all the ambitious and powerful nations of the world to quickly gain the nuclear powered status. Thereafter, in order to ensure world peace, it also led to various sanctions and treaties to curtail the possibility of such enormous power from falling into the hands of the evil-minded. One should learn a lesson from history, and pray that the only arms the world uses are the ones we need for giving each other a hug!

Shoo the shoe away!

Only running is not sufficient anymore! There’s more you have to do to make up for what you made technology do for you!

In this day and age, there are two contrary styles of living that people choose from. While one goads one to mindlessly immerse oneself in the material world, the other involves abhorring (at least pretending to) whatever technology has to offer and thus, ‘go back to the basics’. There is a growing list of lifestyle fads that lean towards the latter style, and the latest one involves going a step backwards in evolution and re-training your feet (almost genetically) to run barefoot!

A latest research, which must surely be disappointing for the ‘running shoe’ makers, says running barefoot improves performance and brings out primal running mechanics in athletes. The advocates of barefoot running blame shoes as the origin of most foot-related injuries. In fact, author of the book Take Off Your Shoes and Walk, Simon J. Wikler D.S.C., reveals that renaissance marked the beginning of foot-related problems and the modern-day foot disabilities are all a result of elevated heels and the pointed toes of present-day footwear. In fact, the author has been heard saying, “Most adults’ foot troubles would either not exist or would be much less bothersome if properly-shaped shoes had been worn during childhood or, better yet, if those people had gone barefoot.” Even a study had found that children who were allowed to go barefoot often had ‘less deformed toes, greater flexor strength, more ability to spread the toes, denser muscles on the bottom of the feet and greater agility than those who had never gone barefoot.’

The cash-strapped economy…

The world’s oldest profession is also facing the brunt of the cash-strapped economy…

But Welfare Economics rightfully says – someone’s loss is someone else’s gain… In Amsterdam, if the high-priced brothels are losing customers; the low-priced shacks are seeing an increase in customers. In fact, countries that have lost a lot of currency value (such as Ukraine), are seeing an increase in tourists and therefore, more people ready to spend on this thrill.

The story in India isn’t quite the same. Neither is the industry legal nor is it organised to enable one to come out with official figures and facts. But being under wraps and spoken about sheepishly in hushed tones doesn’t imply that it isn’t flourishing here. “There aren’t specific clubs so the rates vary. It’s expensive for those who go for extravagant options but otherwise it’s dirt cheap here,” says a young Delhite.

Sexual trafficking becomes common and prevalent when prostitution is illegal. Every year, several girls and children are moved out of their native land and are sold off for such purposes. Legalising this inevitable trade that caters to the dark side of human desire may make it easier to fight this form of slavery and may bring about transparency in this industry. Primarily, it would lead to a reduction in the number of pimps that take advantage of the concealed nature of prostitution in our country.

For a society as conservative as ours, one that firmly believes in the principles of ‘refraining from pleasures’, it seems far-fetched that it will ever come to terms with mainstreaming the parallel existence of prostitution. For now, legalising it within a set of rules would do for the innocent who are bamboozled into entering the flesh trade.

Success begot...

Sharad Gupta investigates what led to the failure of BJP and what is stopping it from being a success

The BJP is undergoing the biggest-ever churning in its 25-years of existence. While the party is yet to officially start a serious analysis of its overwhelming rout in 2009 general elections, discontent has surfaced in many quarters within the party. Its much hyped up image of a party with a difference has failed and failed miserably to click with the voters and the discontent is evident in every quarter of the party. What is strange and more discouraging is that this time its not the small fries but stalwarts like Jaswant Singh, Yashwant Sinha, Dr.Murli Manohar Joshi and Arun Shourie, who have questioned the party’s electoral strategy and handling of post-election results situation. Their contention is that those responsible for the party’s electoral debacle, instead of being punished, have been rewarded.

Indeed, success has many fathers while failure has none. Its also true that while CPI, CPM or even the BSP and SP have done some introspection of their defeat, the BJP leadership hasn’t undertaken any such exercise. BJP’s national executive committee meeting scheduled for June 20-21, too, is likely to be a hogwash. “Brushing issues under the carpet would lead to more disastrous situation. Until we address the issues, how would we resolve them,’’ says a senior leader from Madhya Pradesh.

So far, the BJP has received flak for misguided electoral strategy, lack of ideological focus and absence of a cohesive leadership. The party had been showered with lavish praises only five months ago for retaining power in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The BJP has done extremely well again in Karnataka and Chhattisgarh but, no one in the party has bothered to pick up the positives and try to implement popular programmes in other states. And the result is in front for everyone to see - even for the party leadership which continues to believe that not much has been lost .

No method in this madness...

One of the most ridiculous losses in the history of cricket

Not many would know that the Duckworth Lewis (D/L) method, conceived by Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis, was conceptualised after the fiasco during 1992 World Cup. The semi-final between England and South Africa was a nail-biting match with South Africa needing 22 off 13 balls. The match was interrupted by rain and after the rain ceased, came a ridiculous decision that South Africa would have to chase the required 22 runs but in just one ball! It left the South African team in a dismal state and their supporters infuriated, which also led to the pelting of rubbish on the ground. But the South African team had no respite and team England easily glided through to the finals.

“It was following this disaster that the ICC made an appeal to mathematicians of the world to come up with something better (than the ‘most productive over method’ which was used in that game)”, informed Frank Duckworth. He explained that, “The problem was not that SA were asked to achieve an impossible target after an interruption – this can still happen under D/L method – it was that, 22 off 13 balls was considered to be a 50/50 situation.

Bad idea, sirji!

For once, a Big B dialogue found lacking in “dum”…

Whether Salim-Javed’s dialogues, or his now-one-year old blog, the nation hangs on to every word that Amitabh Bachchan articulates. But when he baritoned “UP me hai dum, jurm hai yahan kam” for a Samajwadi Party advertisement in April 2007, when the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls were in the air, it found few takers. Instead, it found Braj Bhushan Dubey of Ghazipur district filing a petition under Right To Information (RTI) to question the basis of his claim. Though the Election Commission, High Court and the Supreme Court ruled in the actor’s favour and the matter was dismissed on grounds of the information having been obtained from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Crime Records Bureau, it was a slogan that could only be taken with a pinch of salt, particularly when it was just months into the discovery of the Nithari killing fields.

Says Kamal Mitra Chenoy, Professor of Indian Politics at Jawaharlal Nehru University, “Actors shouldn’t dabble in politics unless they are willing to go the whole hog like NTR, or Jayalalitha… it’s a pretty dirty game.

Man who saw tomorrow

DCM failed miserably to see Shiv Nadar’s potential

No one would have dreamt that this simple man hailing from Moolaipozhi Village, Tamil Nadu, would create HCL Computers, one of the most respected companies in India. So where is the dumb part you ask? That was with regard to DCM Data Systems. Shiv Nadar was working for them as an engineer before the entrepreneurial bug bit. HCL would not have happened, if top honchos at DCM Data Systems had shown foresightedness when Nadar told them that the market for 8-bit processors in India was set to boom. Nadar and six others eventually left the company and started HCL in 1976. Fortuitously, IBM decided to exit the Indian operations at that time and HCL rushed to fill the vacuum. The rest is history for HCL and misery for DCM! “It’s a stark contrast; on one hand we have HCL, a renowned name in the field of IT and on the other hand, most people (today) have not even heard about DCM;

Refer[end]um or referendum(b)?

Abuse of referendum is widely practiced across the world...

With growing complexities in political arena and with increase in involvement of civil societies in governance, the role of referendum is ever increasing. It’s becoming the most sought-after form of direct democracy. Well, referendums not only depict the increasing legitimacy of decision-making but also enhances the political participation of citizens as well. But then, like normal elections, referendums are also largely abused in political arena. Last year, the Burmese generals went ahead with the constitutional referendum amidst the humanitarian crisis and asked the voters to either vote in the presence of them or hand over their ballots to the authorities. The voters were left with no option but to support the constitution. Even the French relied on the same method to decide on the establishment of constitution for Europe. And surprisingly 55% of voters rejected the treaty. Every time there was a need for a referendum, successive Croat Government executed the Croat referendum (about sovereignty related clauses) in various states during the Silence period and thus led to a serious violation of the rules and regulations that clearly defined that there should be no referendums during the Silence period. Likewise, when the Colombian referendum was held for the re-election of President Álvaro Uribe, a company named DMG donated 4.7 million pesos to influence the voting.

INFLUENCE: RELIGIOUS LEADERS

How religious leaders can help the world for its betterment

His recent visit to Africa might have drawn some controversies due to his remarks on condoms as ‘not [being] the solution to end HIV/AIDS’, but what one misses is that his visit in itself helped Africa get enough attention from world authorities.

Even Angolan President Eduardo dos Santos, despite the Pope’s ‘condom-controversy’, had to accept, “We are very grateful for all the advice that you have given to our people.” Similarly, the Israeli chief Rabbi, Shlomo Amar, has contributed considerably by reaccepting the Falash Mura community – a group of Ethiopian Jews who converted to Christianity – and also fighting for the rights of non-Israeli immigrant Jews. Similarly, calls or addresses by Muslim leaders like the 49th Imam, Prince Karim Al Husseini or Imam of Jama Masjid remain very prominent. And the Dalai Lama’s politico-religious influence is in another seventh sphere already. Quite clearly, if with great power comes great responsibility, then would it be too churlish for us to comment that with great responsibility comes great duty? Towards global peace?

QSR: SECTOR REPORT

Expansions are on hold & value for money products are the in thing

And the same is echoed in expansion plans of other players, as the industry claims that 50% of promised projects for fiscal year 2008-09 haven’t been delivered yet. “Real estate is emerging as a big challenge...” affirms Vikram Bakshi, MD, McDonald’s India (North & West). However, Big Mac is more comfortable w.r.t. funds for expansion, as it has expanded cautiously, with just 155 stores in 27 cities while Yum! Brands (owner of Pizza Hut & KFC) has 200 outlets across 54 cities. But Yum! is now paying the price as paucity of funds & constant surge in commodity prices makes it worse.

The outcome is price hikes, which are also being adopted by domestic players like Nirula’s. During the last six months of 2008, there has been at least a 40% jump in prices of various products and consequent decline in footfalls by around 20% in the first two months of 2009 (a Technopak estimate). As pundits point out, only ‘value for money’ products are recession proof; no wonder that McDonald’s has been able to grow at 20%, irrespective of slowdown. Even Yum! Brands is planning to introduce its ‘easy on the pocket’ brand Taco-Bel in India. Domino’s has launched a Rs.35 pizza, which, as per Kaul, is doing phenomenally well for the company. Indeed, when input costs are going out of hand, companies have to use the concept of price discrimination to the fullest, wherein they maintain their portfolio of products for the premium audience, but take out more such special products to attract the value buyers. Therefore, this trend is expected to continue till market prospects improve.

POSCO INDIA: SOUNG-SIK CHO

After Cho’s failure to get the Orissa project up and running, Posco must look for an Indian CMD

“During his four-year association with Posco India, Cho has a very little success to talk home about. During Cho’s tenure, violence at the proposed site delayed the implementation of the Rs.510 billion plant,” states S. Pattnayak, former chief Public Relation Officer, POSCO India, who had worked closely with Cho for over two years, and isn’t very positive about the work culture of the former CMD. “Although he is a good human being, and a good communicator, he was unable to build a cordial relationship between Korean & Indian employees,” says Pattnayak.

However, it would be completely one-sided, if we were to only consider Cho’s failures. During his tenure at the helm of affairs, Cho was able to obtain the state government’s recommendation to obtain a prospecting license for Posco in the iron-rich Khandadhar reserve. This was done despite stringent opposition. Besides, the company also obtained stage-I of the forest land diversion proposal clearance from the government. “But the ground reality is that there is not a single work done on the base level. And this is because of the mere negligence of the state as well as central governments. So I do not think it is a failure of Cho, I think it is the failure of Orissa government,” avers Dillip Satapathy, Orissa bureau chief, The Business Standard.

Despite this, Cho was left with no option but to vacate the coveted seat after three years at the top due to his inability to get the Orissa project up and running. Pattnayak pin-points, “Koreans do not tolerate failure, and Cho got punished for the same.” An announcement on the new CMD would probably come in any moment. The next CMD will have to make up for the weaknesses of Cho and ensure he can balance the cultural differences smoothly. In that sense, it would not be a bad idea to have an Indian candidate at the helm to better improve the chances of success.

PROFILE: NITISH KUMAR

Nitish Kumar has become Bihar CM after a long fight and wait, he is now campaigning for a second term

Those who know Nitish say that it is tough even for those who are closest to him, to understand his next move. A born politician for sure, he neither likes compliments nor complaints. He is an ambitious leader and also an autocrat. On condition of anonymity, a senior JD leader said that it is very very difficult to make Nitish happy. He wants things done and wants them done the way he likes them. Such a strong and staunch approach may be looked down upon, but this has taken his career to the heights that he now enjoys.

After he became the CM of Bihar, Nitish has grown in respect within his party through his well-planned and well executed poltical strategies. There is no other leader in JD who can actually replace him, if the need may arise. His stature can be understood from the fact that during the recently held part meeting, he cut short the speech given by national president and put his point forward. There was no hue and cry. Even the opposition calls him ‘the efficient leader’, even when they criticise him. He also makes sure that none of his opponents are angry with him. He was able to manage the anger of BJP leaders and made sure that his friend Sushil Modi continues to sit on the post of deputy-CM even after there was conflict in Delhi. When he was awarded as the best CM by a channel, he said, “My biggest award is the love of my people... Bihar has changed and would change in the next decade.” He seems to be looking for a second term. Surely he wouldn''t want to exercise patience this time around!

SUBHIKSHA: TURMOIL

Subhiksha must adopt a franchise model, but first it needs money real fast!!!

And industry experts believe that the retailer will have some tough time finding the desired funding. Under the new plan, the company also plans to fire some from its current workforce of 15,000 employees (both direct and on contract).

When B&E interacted with Subramanian last year, the company was targeting a store count of 2,300 and a turnover of around Rs.45 billion, which now certainly seems to be a distant dream for the company. Even if Subhiksha is able to arrange the desired liquidity it will not be easy to gain supplier’s confidence. The company may lose some of them even as it starts clearing outstanding debts. One only realises the true value of credibility when it is lost.

The basic problem with Subhiksha’s business model is that even after being established on the ground as a successful model in the Indian market, they missed out on the critical aspect of raising liquidity. Big retailers like Bharti, Future Group, Reliance Retail et al, have already realised the potential of Subhiksha’s business model and announced ventures on similar lines. But Subhiksha should opt for a franchisee model once it survives this period. Going for a franchisee model will definitely improve the growth of the company and it will emerge as a much stronger player in the industry. It should not worry about loss of control in such a model, since no frills models can survive on sub-optimum service levels. And for a man like Subramanian who likes to try new things and has seen many ups and downs in his business, trying a franchisee model will be a useful advice, as there is a low fear of failure.

What’s MNIC?

A card as useless as the idea...

Getting fed up by the infiltration, former Indian PM A. B. Vajpayee, introduced the concept of the Multipurpose National Identity Card (MNIC) in 2002 – to be given only to true Indian nationals – primarily to curb the increasing influx of immigrants from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan. The present government has taken it up for implementation, perchance scrutinising that unlawful immigration into the country was posing a serious threat to national security. The project is focused on select border areas of the country with high illegal immigration.

However, this seems to be another seat of the pants wasteful initiative albeit with a good intention. Immigration has not been India’s problem alone. Almost all developed countries have witnessed the same problem and many have successfully solved it with adequate policy measures; but surely not by issuing cards.

MNIC will be nothing more than an additional burden to the Indian national that he could do well without. With rampant corruption and poor governance, one wonders how much time would it be before such cards are given to illegal immigrants too.

Is he the change we want?

B&E's Priyanka Rai engages in an exclusive one on one with Gujarat CM Narendra Modi

Narendra Modi has always been the topic of controversy. Sometimes for good reason, but most of the time for bad ones. He has been called a communalist leader, but then, India has seen many who share the same image. No one can deny that he is a successful politician, and a strong leader. He has been termed as the CEO of Gujarat and a likely Prime Ministerial candidate by corporate honchos. In this exclusive with B&E, he shares his views on the achievements of his Government in Gujarat, visions for India and the Mumbai terror attacks...

B&E: Your popularity is going up all over India. An MP from Kerala was punished for praising your work. Are you aware you have fans in all parties?
Narendra Modi (NM): I am aware of this. Also through my close friends from other parties and even non-secularist and people who publicly criticise me, they also notice my good work and praise it. I am surprised the Kerala MP was punished for praising my work.

B&E: After what you have done for Gujarat, a lot of people look up to you. They feel that you can do wonders for the nation if you are made the PM of India.
NM: I have studied political science and I remember how such talks and discussions have ruined many leaders in the past. This is not new, such flattery always existed and ruined the minds of big leaders. Its in fashion. People like Yashwant Rao Chauhan, Shankar Rao Chauhan, Sharad Pawar, Jayalalitha & Chandrababu Naidu have been through this. Sometimes Lalu Yadav is also portrayed as the next Prime Minister. I will not fall into this trap. All I know is that people of Gujarat have given me this responsibility to serve this nation, by serving them and I am content with what I am doing.
