Man who saw tomorrow

DCM failed miserably to see Shiv Nadar’s potential

No one would have dreamt that this simple man hailing from Moolaipozhi Village, Tamil Nadu, would create HCL Computers, one of the most respected companies in India. So where is the dumb part you ask? That was with regard to DCM Data Systems. Shiv Nadar was working for them as an engineer before the entrepreneurial bug bit. HCL would not have happened, if top honchos at DCM Data Systems had shown foresightedness when Nadar told them that the market for 8-bit processors in India was set to boom. Nadar and six others eventually left the company and started HCL in 1976. Fortuitously, IBM decided to exit the Indian operations at that time and HCL rushed to fill the vacuum. The rest is history for HCL and misery for DCM! “It’s a stark contrast; on one hand we have HCL, a renowned name in the field of IT and on the other hand, most people (today) have not even heard about DCM;
