A card as useless as the idea...
Getting fed up by the infiltration, former Indian PM A. B. Vajpayee, introduced the concept of the Multipurpose National Identity Card (MNIC) in 2002 – to be given only to true Indian nationals – primarily to curb the increasing influx of immigrants from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan. The present government has taken it up for implementation, perchance scrutinising that unlawful immigration into the country was posing a serious threat to national security. The project is focused on select border areas of the country with high illegal immigration.
However, this seems to be another seat of the pants wasteful initiative albeit with a good intention. Immigration has not been India’s problem alone. Almost all developed countries have witnessed the same problem and many have successfully solved it with adequate policy measures; but surely not by issuing cards.
MNIC will be nothing more than an additional burden to the Indian national that he could do well without. With rampant corruption and poor governance, one wonders how much time would it be before such cards are given to illegal immigrants too.
